Dear Parents/Carers

We wrote to you to consult with you and seek your views on a number of changes that we were proposing to the school day. As we move closer to becoming a Star Academy School, we are aligning our pupil provision and school day to Star curriculum policies. This will allow our school to begin the transition with purpose and continuity and in the very best interest for all our pupils.

The consultation period ended on Thursday 4th June 2020.

The IEB has carefully reviewed all the responses to the consultation on the changing of the timings of the school day.

They are in agreement and supportive with school leaders that the change can go ahead for September 2020.

The changes are as follows:

New Structure of the Primary day 2020-2021

In line with many Star Academy Schools and many local schools, the school will close to pupils on Friday at 12:00pm. This will allow teachers to have their Planning, Preparation and Assessment time on Friday afternoon and not earlier in the week. This will reduce the number of cover teachers that will need to be employed. The end of the school day for Monday to Thursday will remain the same at 3:00pm.  Alongside this change, the school day will begin at 8:30am.

New Structure of the Secondary day 2020-2021

We will be teaching 26 lessons a week which will give your child more contact time with their teachers and we are shortening the lunch break to 35 minutes on Monday-Thursday, as a significant number of students find 40 minutes too long. The changes to the structure of the day will mean an earlier start to the School day at 8.30am and an earlier finish on a Friday of 12pm. All staff will have directed CPD and an opportunity for planning, preparation and assessment on Friday afternoon.

We will write to you in due course with responses to some of the issues that you have raised. Also, we will respond to the concerns raised about childcare on Friday afternoon, among primary parents. We will be exploring an offer of some form of extended provision on Friday afternoon and once we know more we will write back to update you.

Yours sincerely,
