# Maths At Starbank School, our Mathematics curriculum follows the guidance set out in the 2014 National Curriculum.  It equips pupils with the ability to work fluently with numbers and mathematical concepts, as well as developing the skills of logical reasoning, problem-solving and the ability to think in abstract ways.

### EYFS

In Nursery and Reception, mathematics is taught daily and forms part of many interactive learning experiences. Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through play, exploration and small-group, teacher-led sessions.  The learning environments in Nursery and Reception include visual images, models and number resources to stimulate interest. Children are given ample opportunity to develop their understanding of number, measurement, pattern, shape and space, through varied activities that allow them to enjoy, explore, practise and talk confidently about mathematics. Mathematical resources are readily available both indoors and in the outside learning environment.  At this stage, children gain an understanding of number and learn to count, read, write and order numbers to 20. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers, counting on or back to find the answer.  Children work with shapes and begin to learn their properties; use language to give positional clues and compare quantities and they start to identify and recreate patterns.

### Primary Phase

From years 1 to 5, children are taught in mixed ability classes.  In Year 6 they are taught in ability groups which are usually smaller than a whole-class group.  Mathematics lessons take place daily, usually in the morning, and last for 1 hour on average.

In Key Stage 1, children build on the foundations established in EYFS, working with increasingly bigger numbers and more difficult concepts.  At this stage, there is still a strong focus on the use of concrete objects to embed new concepts, before moving on to pictorial and then abstract representations.  Pupils start to use written strategies for calculations and gain a basic understanding of fractions.  They build on their understanding of 2D and 3D shapes and different forms of measurement.  They also start to look at how data is presented in different formats.  Becoming fluent on the basics of mathematics is a priority, but pupils are encouraged daily to apply this understanding to a range of problems and to explain their understanding using mathematical language.

In Key Stage 2, children again become more adept at working with larger numbers and increasingly difficult concepts.  Through to Year 6, a high focus is still put on using practical resources when introducing new concepts so that pupils don’s just ‘do’ the Maths, but understand the process behind it.  Pupils are encouraged to explain their reasoning on a daily basis and apply their understanding to a range of problems.  We aim for our pupils to ‘master’ Maths – to have a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject and to finish Year 6 as highly confident and competent mathematicians.
