Ask your child to write the following words:

tight, might, right, sight

Write the following sentence for your child to read: The night is dark not light.

What minibeasts were in the story?

Which minibeasts had silky skin?

Which minbeasts looked bright in black and red?

Which minbeasts had beautiful ball gowns?

How does the snail get to the party?

Which minibeast was in charge of the music?

Can you write a list of all the minibeasts in this story?

Cut 5 different lengths of string or wool and pretend they are worms!

Ask your child to place the worms in order from longest to shortest.

Can they describe the length of the worms using the key words long, longer, longer, short, shorter, shortest? Now try and measure the length of the worms using a ruler or a tape measure

Task: Expressive Arts and Design:

Can you make a wiggly worm painting? Just drop pieces of string into paint and let them get slimy. Then take out the slippery strings and wiggle them across your paper to make a wormy pattern!

Write the following words and ask you child to read them: surf, hurt

Ask your child to write the following words:

church, burn, curl

Write the following questions for your child to read and answer yes or no:

Is it hard to surf? Is it my turn? Can a cat curl up?

Literacy:

Look at the descriptions of the minibeasts’ appearance e.g. “silky skin can glisten”, “bright in red and black”, “so fine”, “brilliant shine”. The author does not describe what the snail looks like.

Can you help the author by drawing a picture of the snail and writing a description?

E.g. “He has a shiny, spiral shell. He has a slippery body. He has tall, slim antennae”

Height:

Use 5 plastic toy minibeasts (or you could make some from playdough).

Compare the height of the minibeasts. Which is tallest? Which is shortest? Can you place the minibeasts in order from tallest to shortest? Can you describe their heights using the key words taller, taller, tallest, short, shorter, shortest?

Can you measure the height of the minibeasts using a tape measure or a ruler?

Task: Expressive Arts and Design:

Can you use playdough to make your own 3D snail? Roll the dough in your hands to make a long worm shape, then spiral it around to make a beautiful shell. Add the body and head and try and make the snail stand up right. You can find a simple recipe to make playdough here

Write the following words for your child to read: how, down, town

Ask your child to write the following words:

owl, now, down, town

Adult to draw a picture of an owl at the bottom of a tree and another picture of an owl at the top of a tree. Write the following caption:

The owl is high up in the tree.

Can your child read the caption and match it to the correct drawing?

E.g.

The book has cool minibeasts.

Maths:

Weight:

Minibeasts live out in nature. They like sticks, stones, grass and other things you find in your garden. Go outside and collect some natural objects you think minibeasts would like.

Now feel the weight of the natural objects. Which is heaviest? Which is lightest? Can you order the objects from heaviest to lightest by feeling each object in your hands?

Work with an adult to use kitchen scales to check the weight of the objects to see if you put them in the right order.

Task: Understanding the World:

Can you build you own minibeast hotel in your garden or outside your house? Use things you can find at home (flower pots, bricks, boxes, sticks, grass, leaves, branches, mud etc). Check your minibeast hotel every day – have any minibeasts come to stay at the hotel? Add fresh leaves, fruit or vegetable peels to feed the minibeasts.

The snail had so much fun at the ‘minibeast bop’ he has decided to host a party of his own. Can you help him to create party invitations to send to the other minibeasts inviting them to come to his party?

E.g.

To worm,

Please come to my party.

It is on Friday night.

It starts at 8 o’clock.

Soak some spaghetti in water to make your own worms!

Now use a range of containers in your house to explore capacity.

Which container do you think has the largest capacity? (holds the most worms)

Which container has the smallest capacity? (holds the least worms)

Remember to use containers of different shapes and sizes.

Try filling the containers with varying amounts of worms – half full, full, nearly empty, nearly full

Task: Expressive Arts and Design:

Can you be like the bee in the story and make some music for the next minibeast party? You could create your own instruments by tapping pots and pans with wooden spoons or scraping wire racks with cutlery. How many different sounds can you create? Try to create a rhythm or a steady beat which the minibeasts can dance to!

Play digraph spotter – adult to write the following sentences. Child to read the sentences and underline all the digraphs they can find.

Ask your child to write the following sentences:

How can you see at night?

He went for a surf but he got sun burn.

Literacy:

The minibeast bop took place inside the stump of a tree. The snail has decided to host his party in a tree near your house!

Can you write some directions which tell the minibeasts how to travel from your house, to the nearest tree?

E.g.

Go out the front door. Turn left. Walk past three houses. The party tree is in front of the house with the red door.

You could also write a sign to welcome the minibeasts to the party!

Maths:

Distance:

Use objects from around your house to make some woods with a path, a tree stump and lots of trees of different sizes (you could use blocks, books, toilet rolls, cushions – be creative). Once you have built your woods, work with an adult to measure the distance between various points in your woods. How far is the distance between the tree and the path? How far between the tallest tree and the shortest tree? Measure the various distances in centimetres using a ruler or tape measure. Which two points in your woods are furthest apart? Which are closest together?

Task: Physical Development:

Can you slide like a snail? Can you wiggle like a worm? Can you fly like a butterfly? How many different minibeasts can you move like? Try listening to music as you pretend to be the minibeasts. Listen to the rhythm of the music. How would the minibeasts dance and move?
