Explore themes in a variety of poetic pieces.

Think about the following questions:

What is poetry?

What is it used for?

Who can be a poet?

Read through the selection of poems. Which poem did you like? Why? What is similar and different about the poems?

What is the key idea in each poem?

What does it tell us about the poet?

Have a go at performing your favourite poem.

Can you explain what you think, ‘Finding your voice’ means?

Topic:

This week your afternoon task will be to design and make a bird hide.  There is a workbook to supplement this project, which your teacher will make available, you can print this or can collect a paper copy from the school office.

Look up the word ornithology, what does it mean?

What problems do you think bird watchers and nature photographers encounter?  Have you ever tried to go up to a bird in your garden?  What happens?

How could you get close to the birds?

Brainstorm your ideas.  Go into your garden and see what types of birds are living in your local area.  You can type their descriptions into a search engine and find out what they are.

To analyse authorial viewpoint and voice in poetry.

Look at the title of the poem ‘Talking Turkeys’

What is the poem about?

What is the theme of the poem?

Look at words spelt differently, what do you notice about them? Is there an accent in there?

Can we predict where the poet originates from?

What views do we think the poet holds?

Use the poem to explain your answer

What is a ‘bird hide’?

What is its purpose?

What are they made from?

What do you have at home that can be substituted for these materials?  Can you find any materials in the garden? Sticks, stones etc…

Gather materials from around the house that could be used to make a bird hide.  The following are examples, using old scraps of fabric and lollipops sticks and straws.

Re- read ‘Talking Turkeys’

Look at the highlighted section.

What is the true meaning of these root words? (CHRIST and MASS)

What relevance does this have in the poem?

Explain this.

Using the poem, list what you learn about the poet and his viewpoints.

Explain what freedom of speech is.

Does everyone have it?

How would we feel if we had our freedom of speech taken from us?

If Benjamin Zephaniah is entitled to his views- What does that also mean for people who disagree with him?

Topic:

Design a bird hide.

On paper, or in SketchUp if you are confident, design your bird hide with the resources you have managed to gather in mind.  This can be small or life-size depending on what you have available.

 

Maths:

This week you will be continuing looking at maths investigations.
