Dear Parent/Guardian of SECONDARY PUPILS

I hope that you and your family are well,

As you may be aware, the Government has announced all schools in England must open for at least 32.5 hours a week for all students. At Starbank Secondary School, we are currently open for 30.34 hours a week. We will need to extend our school week by just over 2 hours.  The change would take effect from September 2022.

We have considered several ways to meet the Government’s requirement. The preferred option is enclosed with this letter.  We believe that the preferred option minimises any negative impact on our students participating in evening events/after-school clubs, parents collecting children from other schools, and traffic caused by the closing time of nearby schools.

We are interested in your views on the proposed change. A copy of this letter, and the enclosed form is available at the following link https://bit.ly/SHSSD2022. If you have any views, please complete the form, and submit online. Alternatively, a hard copy of the letter and proposal form is available from the school’s reception, and you can return a hard copy to us by Friday 24th June

The final decision on the school timings will be communicated at the end of June.

Thank you for your support and guidance – it is really appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Gaetano Ferrante
Principal

Proposal

The Government has announced that all schools in England must open for at least 32.5 hours a week. At Starbank, we are currently open for 30.34 hours a week, so will need to extend our school week by just over 2 hours. I have considered several ways to do this.

The preferred option is outlined below. The changes would take effect from September 2022.

Proposed Change

Timings:

8.20am till 3.20pm (Monday till Thursday)
8.20am till 12.50pm (Friday)

Considerations:

  • 2 hours of additional school opening time spread across the week.
  • Finish time will be 3.20pm compared to current 3.10pm – Monday – Thursday. No impact with primary school for 4 days
  • Extra time on Friday which allows for an additional lesson. A finish of 12.50pm compared to the current 12.05pm
  • Earlier finish for Secondary compared to primary school on Friday. This may impact on parents who pick up secondary pupils returning to pick up primary later in the afternoon.
  • No impact on evening school clubs or after school events which pupils may be part of.
  • No impact on parents/staff collecting children from other schools.
  • No impact on traffic and times for other local schools.

Structure of the Day:
