Parents of pupils at Starbank School
You may have read an article in today’s edition of Birmingham Live regarding a staffing restructure at Starbank School which has prompted some members of NASUWT to vote for strike action early in the summer term. This action is limited to the secondary school site on Hob Moor Road. We are continuing to work with staff to resolve their concerns; however, if the proposed industrial action does take place your child should continue to attend school as normal.
I am writing to reassure you of our commitment to providing your children with the best possible quality of education, a commitment that is shared by the school and Star Academies.
The need for a staffing restructure became apparent when Star Academies undertook due diligence prior to the school’s conversion. The previous staffing structure was not financially sustainable and was leading to an unrecoverable deficit. Some areas of the school were overstaffed while others were understaffed, a position that was not going to yield improved outcomes for pupils.
Over recent months, Star Academies has worked with the school leadership, staff and professional associations to put in place an affordable structure that will enable delivery of the full curriculum, effective pastoral support and provision for pupils with additional needs, alongside maintaining effective operations across the school site. This process has been open and fair.
The new staffing structure will be in operation from May 3rd and we will write to you at that point with an update on changes to staffing and the implications for your child. We will continue to work with staff who are leaving the school to help them to secure employment elsewhere.
The restructuring process is never easy and we understand that this is an anxious time for the individuals involved. However, it was unavoidable if we are to provide your children with the education that they deserve.
Thank you for your continued support.
