Open Day 2020

A welcome to parents, carers and pupils to Starbanks virtual open evening.

I am delighted and privileged to be the Principal of Starbank Secondary School and I thank you for considering Starbank as your school of choice for September 2021.

Starbank School officially became part of the Star Academies family, one of the country’s best performing multi-academy trusts on the 1st October 2020 but we have been working closely with them for the majority of 2020. Starbank School is an improving school. I have ambitions and aspirations for it to be one of the best performing schools in Birmingham and in the country. Starbank is a place where I want our pupils to be safe, happy and well and where I recognise and value the contribution of our staff and community to help our pupils achieve positive outcomes.

At Starbank School, we are dedicated to providing educational excellence for all of our pupils and committed to helping them to reach their full potential. In line with our mission to promote educational excellence, character development and service to communities, we ensure our pupils develop essential academic skills and prioritise the development of well-rounded individuals through participation in community, cultural and sporting activities.

We have a culture of high expectations and we continuously encourage our pupils to aspire to be the best they can be. Our teachers and staff are experienced, well-qualified professionals who work together to deliver the best possible outcomes for our pupils. We take a personalised approach, where pupils are set aspirational, but achievable targets through a curriculum pathway that meets their individual needs. This is developed through a strong and supportive system of pastoral care provided by a dedicated team of Pastoral Leaders and form tutors.

Working closely with all of our stakeholders and with the support of you as our parents is the key to success. We strive to nurture confident, healthy and well-balanced young people who are ambassadors for our STAR values of Service, Teamwork, Ambition and Respect. We want all of our pupils to make a positive contribution as considerate members of society.  I believe that we can empower our pupils and make our school the beacon for our community. I look forward to hopefully seeing you all in September 2021 and for your pupils to become our class of 2026.

Finally,

Please watch all the videos on this page, as they will provide you with the tools and information you need for a smooth admissions procedure. Don’t forget to visit our website frequently and follow us on our Starbank twitter account for all the up to date news.

Thank you.

Achievement and Enrichment

Here at Starbank school we strongly believe in our core values of Service, Teamwork, Ambition, Respect.

We also recognise our pupils when they contribute to these core values both in school and in the local community. Pupils are given Achievement points for demonstrating these values which contribute to STAR points.

These STAR points, alongside excellent attendance and punctuality are rewarded weekly with postcards and text message home. These outstanding displays of Character, Work Ethic and Achievement allow our pupils to become STAR citizens and receive half termly reward trips and activities.

At Starbank we also believe in developing pupils’ leadership skills and pupils can take part in the leadership enrichment programme around the 5 Star leadership foundations of Star Sports, Star Creative, Star Performers, Star Citizens, Star Futures.

There are many opportunities available for you at Starbank at I hope to see you in September to become fully immerse in the Starbank experience.

Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum at Starbank Academy aims to ensure that every pupil can succeed to the best of their ability by studying a broad and balanced set of subjects. Our curriculum is designed to provide tailored, flexible routes through the academy. Where necessary personalised pathways are constructed in terms of intervention, alternative curricula or other arrangements for our children.

The curriculum model is based on our STAR values of Service, Teamwork, Ambition and Respect. We have a broad and balanced Key Stage 3 curriculum which quickly builds upon pupil’s primary education.

Pupils study a range of 14 subjects at Key Stage 3. We ensure all our pupils have firm foundations in English, mathematics and science. Crucially, we build on the work of primary schools in grammar, vocabulary development, reading and writing which we know our imperative for all subjects as a consequence of the more rigorous GCSEs. If needed we will put in place additional English interventions to support your child.

All students study Spanish and continue this language through to GCSE. Additionally, all pupils study History, Geography, Computer Science and Religious Studies.

In addition to this strong focus on more academic subjects, our students also experience a range of practical and expressive subjects including design technology, PE, art and music every week.

Lastly, your child will have a weekly PSHE lesson (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education). PSHE supports a wide range of issues from relationships to careers.

In Year 7 our pupils are put in mixed ability teaching groups with the exception of Maths and English. Setting for these two subjects is initially based from Y6 SATs results and fine-tuned over the academic year during our five formal assessment points.

This balanced diet of subjects ensures our pupils develop into rounded individuals, with a range of strengths and talents. Most importantly, the key stage 3 curriculum contains real challenge and rigour, and builds the foundations that our students will need to go on to success at GCSE, A-Level and University.
