Tuesday 9th April 2019
This has been an exciting term for our students and school. We have been involved in many projects such as the Junior PCSO scheme; NSPCC assemblies and workshops focusing on keeping safe; and drama workshops and performances led by Birmingham Hippodrome.
We are now a Duke of Edinburgh Centre which means that our secondary students will be able to partake in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme – we are in the process of planning for our first expedition! As part of our Careers Guidance programme Year 9 students engaged with business interviews. Representatives from local employers, including Selfridges, Jaguar Land Rover, The University of Birmingham and Birmingham City Football Club interviewed our students. This was an invaluable experience and will support Year 9 well for both their upcoming Work Experience placements (week beginning 13/05) and beyond, when they are applying for Post 16 opportunities.
Community events have been very successful this term; many of you attended the coffee mornings, curriculum workshops and Dads Matter initiatives, all of which have supported our families and students. Earlier this term, Lord Mayor Yvonne Mosquito attended Starbank alongside members from the local community including the Police and local businesses. This gave our Family and Community Engagement team (FACE) the opportunity to share examples of the work that they engage in and showcase their successes. The recent family trip to Drayton Manor was incredibly popular and enjoyed by all who attended. Our FACE team (Nargis, Christine and Fardowsa) are now planning workshops and events for next term, some of these include: curriculum workshops; sessions for parents around knife crime; and a summer fayre. Your support and engagement is essential for the success of the school and community.
Thank you for all donations for Comic Relief on Red Nose Day; we managed to raise an impressive £1587. Some of you will be aware of Cyclone Idai, which swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe and has left children and families extremely vulnerable. We would like to support Save the Children in raising funds to provide essential supplies and relief and therefore would welcome any contributions (coins, loose change and pounds). A collection box will be available on each site for this week.
The Holy month of Ramadan is nearly upon us, with the beginning of Ramadan starting early May. If your child is in Years 4, 5 or 6 and you want him/her to fast please confirm this in writing to your child’s teacher. Ramadan falls within the examination period at a time where our students may already be feeling anxious. It is important that during this period our students are able to perform to the best of their ability and therefore we will ensure that there is suitable provision at lunchtime for those students who wish to fast. May the Holy month of Ramadan and this Eid be a peaceful and blessed occasion for our families and communities.
Starbank School is working in partnership with parents to improve school attendance. We would like to congratulate the many parents who make sure their children attend school regularly and on time. Head Teachers may not authorise leave during term time except where the circumstances are exceptional. Please remember that parental illness, going shopping, visiting family, truancy, not wanting to go to school and alleged bullying (speak to school immediately to resolve the issue) are not acceptable reasons to be absent. All of these will be recorded as unauthorised absence.
Finally, thank you for your continued support this term. School will finish on Friday 12th April at the normal time for our primary students. Secondary students will finish school at 12.20pm. Students who would normally have a free school meal will have the option to take away a packed lunch. It is important your child/children are aware of the arrangements for this day and whether they will be collected/expected to make their own way home.
