Wednesday 18th March 2020

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you will no doubt be aware, the Government has made a number of announcements in relation to measures to prevent the further spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The health and safety of our pupils, staff and the wider school community is, as always, our number one priority. As you know, we have been closely following all government guidance relating to the virus. We have also taken all the necessary precautions since the national outbreak to prevent it from impacting our school and to keep pupils safe.

There are no confirmed cases of any student or member of staff at Starbank Secondary School contracting Covid-19.

Whilst the Government has not announced the widespread closure of schools, unfortunately the cumulative impact of the current measures has led to significant levels of staff absence for those staff with underlying health issues or those needing to self-isolate.

Therefore, regrettably I have to inform you that we will be partially closing Starbank Secondary School to all students in Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 with immediate effect until further notice. The summer term will begin on Monday 20th April but it is still very unclear whether we will return on this date.

In the meantime, all students in Year 10 and Year 11 (unless they are self-isolating or have been advised to self-isolate) can and should continue to attend school as normal until notified otherwise.

You can be assured we will continue to monitor local and national developments and keep everyone updated.

Whilst we understand that this is likely to cause disruption for you and your family, we will shortly have in place robust plans in place so that your child can continue their education during this time. As always, we are committed to ensuring that our pupils receive the best possible education and will be working hard to minimise the impact of the closure on your child’s education.

To this end, we have planned a significant amount of work that your child will be able to complete at home online from Friday 20th March. We will be shortly informing you of this and directing you to the school website page for further information.

If your child in year 7 – 9 is eligible for a free school meal and you wish for a packed lunch to be provided, please contact the main office on 0121 464 8412 (until we have full closure).

Where appropriate further information specific to your child will follow. However, in the meantime I am very sorry for this and would like to take this opportunity to thank you wholeheartedly for your understanding and ongoing support in helping us to manage this unprecedented situation.

Yours Sincerely,

Mr G Ferrante
