Social Enterprise & Service

to Communities

Our project-based Citizenship curriculum teaches young people critical life-long skills such as collaboration, resourcefulness and accountability. Pupils take on increasingly responsible leadership roles that culminate in Leadership and Social Enterprise Projects in which they identify a community concern, and then plan, execute and evaluate a project to address it. Through these projects, our pupils:

  • Successfully manage challenging projects, from articulating a vision to project realisation
  • Anticipate and manage risks through strategic communication
  • Understand the role of advocacy
  • Manage stressful situations and negotiate with confidence
  • Build networks across multiple communities and stakeholders
  • Create and manage budgets that align to strategy
  • Lead and manage people
  • See change through a new lens
Duke of Edinburgh Award

Pupils in Year 9 have the opportunity to study for the Bronze Award and students in Year 10 for the Silver award.

Volunteering:

This is all about making a difference to other people’s lives. Getting off the sofa and taking time out to change things for the better can be great fun. From conservation to youth work, fundraising for their favourite charity or caring for animals, there’s an almost endless list of the types of projects they can get involved in.

Skills:

This is all about developing practical and social skills and personal interests. Either develop an existing skill or choose a new skill, boost self-esteem and learn how to set and rise to the challenge.

Physical:

This section encompasses all of the traditional sports and many more! For most young people there is no difficulty in choosing something to suit. The emphasis is on getting active and showing progress, not creating world beaters.

One of the above sections is to be followed for six months, the other for three months.

Expedition:

This is the final, and obviously most attractive section. Here, pupils have to complete an expedition over two days carrying all of their equipment and camp overnight. At all times they must demonstrate navigation, camp-craft and team working skills. In preparation for the Expedition there is a meeting every Wednesday from 3pm for an hour. Pupils will develop their map reading skills which are vital for them to safely embark on the expedition and all pupils will follow a first aid course in school. As well as this, there is a series of practice day walks, a training weekend and one practice expedition.

It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from – there’s more to life than sitting on the sofa watching life pass you by!
